Beta-cyclodextrin (β-CD) is a cone-shaped molecule. It is hydrophilic at the outer surface of the cavity for many hydroxyl groups, but hydrophobic in the cavity. So β-CD is soluble in water, and a variety of hydrophobic guest molecules can be encapsulated in its non-polar cavity. Such a characteristic has been widely applied in the fields of drug-controlled release, separation and adsorption. In drug delivery, β-CD can be used as a complexing agent because it forms an inclusion complex with a drug molecule. The complex of cyclodextrin increases the aqueous solubility and dissolution rate of the drug, which is useful for the delivery of the medical agent to a biological system. It can be used in a wide range of applications including:
• Synthesis of renewable and biocompatible metal-organic frameworks.
• Formation of inclusion complexes with a variety of guest molecules to increase their solubility in water and other polar solvents.
• Synthesis of β-CD based nanogels and dendrimers as carriers and stabilizers for drug delivery applications.
